Fish Thermoregulation

• Fish are cold blooded
• Fish are ectothermic meaning their body temprature varies with the temprature of the environment
• Fish need oxygen to breath and do this by absorbing dissolved oxygen from the water through their gills instead of their lungs
• Fish loose heat through their gills
• A correct diet in important for fish growth and health
• There are 3 types of feeders:

  • Top or Surface feeders (Hatchet fish/ Halfbeak)
  • Mid-water feeders (Barbs/Angel Fish)
  • Bottom feeders (Plecos/ Catfish)
• Feeding:

  Feed only the ammount of food a fish can consume in 2 minutes
• Provide appropriate quantities of food for different types of fish
• Scoop out uneaten food before it rots to avoid ammonia build up
• OverFeeding

  
  

  Reasons: Fish will eat all food provided. This could be due to competition within the tanks

  
  

  Signs: A dirty, polluted tank or obesity
• UnderFeeding

  
  

  Reasons: New or inappropriate invironment/ Change in PH or Temprature

  
  

  Signs: Fish not consuming any food/ Malnourishment

  • Flakes
  • Frozen
