Speed of Conductance

Cards (4)

  • Myelination is the process of insulating the axon with myelin sheaths to increase the speed of impulses
  • Saltatory conduction is the rapid movement of action potentials along the axon, jumping from node to node increasing velocity
  • When axon diameter is wider, there is an increase in speed, and a lesser likelihood of ions leaking from the axon
  • When temperature is higher, an increase in kinetic energy allows ion to diffuse faster, enzymes work faster in respiration, so more ATP is produced for the Na+/K+ pumps
