  • Research
    Collecting data and information, learning and finding new things. It is also an advanced knowledge which follows a systematic process of collecting and analyzing information in order to understand more the phenomena under study.
  • Thesis
    A dissertation embodying results of original research and especially substantiating a specific view; especially: one written by a candidate for an academic degree.
  • Jargons
    A specialized language used by a specific group of people. When a jargon is used to confuse or mislead, it is considered negative; however, it is appropriate when carried out within a specific profession or area of study.
  • Environment or sector
    • Describing the context or environment in which the concept operates or is commonly found.
  • Etymology
    • Tracing the origin and historical development of the word or concept being defined. Understanding the etymology can provide insights into the meaning and evolution of the concept over time.
  • Evoking the senses
    • Appealing to the reader's senses to create a vivid and engaging description of the concept.
  • Examples or anecdotes
    • Providing specific examples or anecdotes to clarify the definition and illustrate how the concept is applied in real-world situations.
  • Historical references/ Historical Background
    • Referencing historical events, figures, or movements relevant to the concept being defined.
  • Description/Listing and describing of parts
    • Breaking down the subject into its constituent parts and describing each part in detail.
  • Negation/ Negatives
    • Explaining what the concept is not, to further clarify its boundaries and distinguish it from related concepts.
  • Ramifications
    • Discussing the consequences or implications of the concept being defined.
  • Technical definition
    The definition of a word as used in a particular field like Science, Law, or Engineering. The meaning of the word is associated with the field or area of study. Mostly refers to the aspect of explaining or describing any terminology. The definition of terms/words are found in the dictionary.
  • Operational definition
    A result of the process of operationalization and it is used to define something (term/object) in terms of process. It is the process of defining a word/term of how it is used in a sentence, or using context clues. It is the application of the word/term. These may include the various attempts to define or explain a certain process and its properties including but not limited to the characterization of the event itself.
  • Expanded definition, also called extended definition

    A type of technical definition that is used when a certain word or phrase needs to be explained with much detail or to be defined in a particular context or situation. This kind of definition may be a few sentences or several pages long.
  • Formal definition

    A precise and specific description of a term or concept using language that is clear, unambiguous, and often technical. It aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the term or concept by outlining its essential attributes, characteristics, and boundaries. Formal definitions are commonly used in academic disciplines, technical fields, and areas of study where precision and clarity are crucial.
  • Term or concept
    The term or concept being defined is stated explicitly at the beginning of the definition
  • Definition
    • Typically places the term within a broader category (genus)
    • Specifies the unique features or characteristics (differentia) that distinguish it from other members of that category
