  • Changes to racial attitudes:
    • Demography refers to the structure of society, and the makeup of the population.
    • In the 1950’s and 1960’s the demographic of the UK began changing
    • At this time, it was not illegal to discriminate someone because of their race.
    • 1965- Race Relations Act, promotion of hatred and race discrimination made illegal.
    • 1976- The Act was amended to make more types of discrimination illegal, focusing on direct AND indirect discrimination affecting ethnicities.
    • 2010- The Act was replaced by the Equality Act, making all protected characteristics illegal to discriminate against.
    • Racism became less socially acceptable, with many punishments being introduced
    • Psychologists argue that when laws change, our behaviour, our attitude changes to suit the new behaviour
    • According for the 1987 British Attitudes Survey, 39% of people admitted to being racially prejudice. In 2017 this had fallen to 26%
