racial
attitudes:
Demography
refers to the
structure
of society, and the
makeup
of the population.
In the
1950’s
and
1960’s
the
demographic
of the
UK
began
changing
At this time, it was not
illegal
to
discriminate
someone because of their
race.
1965-
Race
Relations
Act
,
promotion
of
hatred
and
race discrimination
made
illegal.
1976-
The Act was
amended
to make
more types
of
discrimination illegal
, focusing on
direct
AND
indirect discrimination
affecting ethnicities.
2010-
The Act was replaced by the
Equality
Act, making all
protected characteristics
illegal to
discriminate
against.
Racism became
less socially acceptable
, with many
punishments
being introduced
Psychologists argue that when
laws change
, our
behaviour
, our
attitude changes
to suit the
new behaviour
According for the
1987
British Attitudes Survey,
39%
of people
admitted
to being racially prejudice. In
2017
this had fallen to
26%
