    Ideas: Description of Thornfield, presented as a medieval, isolated estate. Conforms to gothic tropes. Suggests that Thornfield (and Jane) is a dark and boring place without Rochester. Cheerless is similar to the description of Bertha's laugh- her life (like Jane) is one of coldeness without Rochester- with him its one of high emotion, she is immediately present at Thornfield.
