Respiration

Cards (23)

  • What is the word equation respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen -> Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy
  • What is energy released in the form of?
    ATP Molecules.
  • What is Aerobic Respiration?
Process of producing energy from glucose in the presence of oxygen.
  • What is Anaerobic Respiration?
    Respiration without oxygen.
  • What is the word equation for Anaerobic respiration?
    GlucoseLactic acid.
  • What are the advantages of Anaerobic Respiration?

Muscles can release a small amount of energy for a short period of time.
  • What are the disadvantages for Anaerobic Respiration?
    1. Lactic acid build-up (Cramps).
    2. It isn't suitable for activities that require a lot of energy.
  • What is Oxygen Debt?
Accumulated oxygen deficit during intense exercise.
  • What benefits can a Fit Person have when it comes to respiration?
    1. Breathe in a greater volume of air,
    2. Produce less lactic acid,
    3. Break down lactic acid faster.
  • What is the order of Inspiration? (Breathing in)
    1. Intercoastal muscles contract, Ribcage moves up and out.
    2. Diaphragm contracts, moves down and flattens.
    3. Volume of thorax increases.
    4. Pressure inside thorax decreases
    5. Lungs inflate and draw air into the lungs.
  • What is the order for expiration? (Breathing out)
    1. Intercoastal muscles relax. Ribcage moves in.
    2. Diaphragm relaxes and moves up.
    3. Volume of thorax decreases.
    4. Pressure inside thorax increases.
    5. Air is pushed out of the lungs.
  • What part of the body represents the bell jar? (Bell jar model)

A ribcage, as it is approximately the same shape, but it cannot move like to an actual ribcage.
  • What body part represents the balloon in the bell jar model?
A lung, because it can inflate and deflate. However, a balloon is not as complex as a actual lung.
  • What body part does the Rubber Sheet represent in the Bell Jar Model?
The diaphragm, because it has a domed up position which matches position when air is exhaled. However, it pulls down further than flat.
  • What body part does the tube connected to the balloon represent in the Bell Jar Model?
The Trachea, because its similar to the windpipe connecting to the balloons (Lungs). However, it is not opened and closed by horseshoe shaped stiffening rings.
  • How are alveoli adapted to gaseous exchange?
    1. Good blood supply,
    2. Large Surface Area,
    3. Thin Walls,
    4. Moist Lining
  • What is Gaseous exchange?
The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between an organism and its environment.
  • How do the lungs stay clean?
The cilia moves the mucus created. Which we then swallow.
  • What are common smoking diseases?
    1. Lung Cancer
    2. Emphysema
  • What chemicals does tobacco contain?
    Nicotine, tar, carbon monoxide.
  • What is Nicotine?
A addictive drug that makes it hard to quit. Nicotine makes your heartbeat rise as well as your blood pressure.
  • What is Carbon Monoxide?
A gas that contains haemoglobin, it reduces the oxygen carrying capacity by as much as 15% in heavy smokers.
  • What is Tar?

A sticky, black substance that collects in the lungs when the smoke cools. Tar contains carcinogens, which is a chemical substance known to cause cancer.
