JesusChrist is the onetruepriest, but he has shared his priesthood with his Apostles so that they, too, can servethepeopleinhisname
At the Last Supper
1. Jesus said "Do this in memory of me"
2. This commissioned the Apostles with the power and authority to celebrate the Liturgy of the Eucharist
After his resurrection
1. Jesus appeared to his Apostles
2. Jesus breathed on them saying "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive men's sins, they are forgiven them; if you hold them bound, they are held bound"
3. This bestowed on the Apostles the power and authority to forgive sins
Before Jesus ascended to heaven
1. He commanded the Apostles "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to carry out everything I have commanded you"
2. This gave the Apostles the power and authority to baptize people and spread the Word of God
As the number of these early Christians grew, the community assembled together one day and decided to invite more disciples to minister to their needs as a community
It is not right for us to neglect the Word of God in order to wait on tables
The community
1. Looked around among their own number
2. Chose seven men acknowledged to be deeply spiritual and prudent
3. Appointed them to this task
4. This permitted the Apostles to concentrate on prayer
