• LINGUISTICS - the study of language
• LANGUAGE - used by human beings to communicate with one another
• COMMUNICATION - latin verb "communicare" means to impart, to share or make it common.
• two types of communication is non-verbal and verbal.
• Grammar - set of structural rules governing the composition of clauses, phrases, and words in any given natural language.
• PHONETICS - the study of the sounds of words and the way they are produced.
• PHONOLOGY - how sounds are made and how they are used
• MORPHOLOGY - structure of words; how they are formed and their relationship to other words in the same language.
• SYNTAX - Combine to form a grammatical sentences. Structure of phrases and sentences.
• SEMANTIC - giving or studying the meaning of the words.
• Branches of linguistics:

  1. developmental linguistics - development of linguistic ability in an individual, particularly in acquisition of language in childhood.
  2. sociolinguistics - effect of any and all aspects of society and the effects language used on society.
  3. psycholinguistics - enables humans to acquire, use, comprehend and produce language. (cognitive)
• POLYGLOT - A person who speaks more than one language.
