Moncada barracks attack

• Moncada barracks failed as the army was able to defend the barracks
• 70/140 rebels were killed
• rebels that escaped outed down and arrested, including Castro and his brother
• Batista wanted to use the trial of the surviving rebel leaders as a show piece of the regimes strength- this was to act as a deterrent to any opponents of Batista's regime
• the 26th July movement was established
• Castro defended himself, as he was a trained lawyer- gave his famous "history will absolve me" speech-
