  • Problems of towns:
    There were no laws governing the quality of buildings, they built as many dwellings as they could to ensure maximum income
  • Houses were crammed together, many had no foundations, they were damp lacked ventilation.
  • Very few had any form of sanitation, sometimes there was a privy shared between houses
  • All water had to be fetched by hand from a communal pump,

    The awful living conditions were an ideal environment for disease to spread
    TB, diphtheria,measles,cholera and influenza were just a few diseases which claimed hundreds of thousands of lives

  • There were no rubbish collectors, no street clearers or sewers, and no fresh running water.
