  • Malala Yousafazi
    Muslim, Stood up against the Taliban who were taking away peoples freedoms including education for girls. She refused to stop attending school and was shot in the head by the Taliban. She has since fought for equal education for girls around the world. As a Muslim believes that education is important as it allows people to find out more about God.
  • Katherine Johnson
    Presbyterian Christian, Was involved in the mathematical work of NASA- helping to get astronauts made it to and from space safely. Was one of the first black students to attend college and worked hard in a white, male dominated workforce. Her religion believes education is vital and therefore she worked hard to educate herself.

    Jewish, Woman paratrooper during world war II. She fought anti-Semitism and was killed during the war.
  • Martin Luther King
    Lutheran - Christian, Fought for equality in America between black and white citizens through peaceful protests such as the bus boycotts. He is well known for his famous speech- 'I have a dream'
  • Olaudah Equiano
    Christian, Was a slave and wrote a book about his experiences to educate people about the horrible treatment of slaves, he made clear that these actions were not Christian. Encouraged people to vote against slavery by linking to religious ideas of loving and caring Christians.
  • Nelson Mandela
    Christian, Spent 27 years in prison after peacefully protesting against apartheid in South Africa (separation of black and white people). Mandela was part of the 'Spear of the Nation' a group which planned events which would cause disruption but they never planned to hurt anyone. They warned that attacks would happen and these included attacking government buildings, machines and power facilities and burning crops.
