Genes and the Environment

Cards (8)

  • Genotype
    • The genes of an organism for one specific trait.
    • Combination of alleles an organism has for each gene.
  • Phenotype
    • The physical appearance of a trait in an organisation.
    • Characteristic that results from the combination of alleles and the environment.
  • Dominant
    • Characters are expressed.
    • Dominant trait refers to a genetic feature that “hides” the recessive trait in the phenotype of an individual.
    • Capital letter.
  • Recessive
    • Their characteristics are suppressed.
    • The term recessive describes a trait that is covered over( or dominated) by another form of that and seems to disappear.
    • Lowercase
  • Homozygous
    • Two alleles that are the same for a trait (pure).
  • Heterozygous
    • Two different alleles for a trait (hybrid).
  • Variant
    • Different versions of a gene.
  • Genes and the environment can influence the characteristics of an organism:
    • It's not only genotype that can affect an organism's phenotype — interactions with the environment (the conditions in which the organisms lives) can modify a phenotype.
    • Most variation in phenotype is determined by a mixture of genetic and environmental factors.
