- Lloyd George (Britain):> Britain suffered huge casualties in the war, with 800,000 soldiers dying in the trenches therefore they wanted the Treaty to be harsh.
- Lloyd George (Britain):> David Lloyd George wanted to keep the German economy strong so that they could trade with Britain.
- Lloyd George (Britain):> The British leadership was also worried that if they were too harsh, Germany would want revenge.
- Clemenceau (France):> 1.3 million French soldiers died in the war and over 300,000 civilians, therefore they wanted the treaty to be very harsh.
- Clemenceau (France):> Clemenceau wanted to cripple the German economy, so that they would never be rich enough to challenge France again.
- Wilson (USA):> The USA only joined the war in 1917 and suffered less than 120,000 deaths therefore they did not want to completely destroy Germany.
- Wilson (USA):> Wilson wanted to set up a League of Nations to help countries to trade and protect peace.
- Wilson (USA):> Wilson wanted the peace to be based around his ‘Fourteen Points’. The six key principles of the Fourteen Points were: Setting up a League of Nations, disarmament, self-determination for the people of Europe - the right to rule themselves freedom for colonies, freedom of the seas andfree trade.
