  • Blood Donation
    1. Collecting whole blood (RBC, plasma, WBC, platelet) from donor within 15 mins using gauge 16-18 needle
    2. Collecting specific component and returning unused component to the donor within 45 mins to 2 hrs

  • Autologous donors

    Collect blood 5 to 6 weeks preceding a scheduled surgery, no later than 72 hours before, for autologous use only
  • Direct donation
    Collecting shed blood from the surgical site, processing the blood, reinfusing the blood
  • Most autologous blood is used to treat surgical blood loss in very specific situations where there is a reasonable opportunity to avoid homologous transfusions or when compatible allogeneic blood is not available
  • Directed donors

    The tag for the directed unit is a distinct color (e.g., yellow, salmon), if the donor is a blood relative the unit must be irradiated to prevent graft versus host disease

    • Have you taken aspirin or anything that has aspirin in it in the past 48 hours?
    • Have you donated blood, platelets, or plasma in the past 8 weeks?
    • Have you had any vaccinations or other shots in the past 8 weeks?
    • Have you had contact with someone who was vaccinated for smallpox in the past 8 weeks?
    • Have you donated a double unit of red cells using an apheresis machine in the past 16 weeks?
    • Have you had a blood transfusion in the past 12 months?
    • Have you had a transplant such as organ, tissue, or bone marrow in the past 12 months?
    • Have you had a graft such as bone or skin in the past 12 months?
    • Have you come into contact with someone else's blood in the past 12 months?

    • Temporary Deferral
    • Indefinite Deferral
    • Permanent Deferral

    Prospective donor is unable to donate blood for a limited period of time
  • Temporary Deferral
    • Donor has received a blood transfusion; defer for 12 months from date of transfusion
    • Donor received vaccination for yellow fever; defer for 2 weeks from date of vaccination
  • Indefinite Deferral
    Prospective donor is unable to donate blood for someone else for an unspecified period of time due to current regulatory requirements
  • Indefinite Deferral
    • Donor states they have lived in England for 1 year in 1989; defer indefinitely
  • Permanent Deferral
    Prospective donor will never be eligible to donate blood for someone else
  • Permanent Deferral
    • Donor states that he or she has hepatitis C; defer permanently
  • Permanent or Indefinite Deferral (AABB)

    • History of viral hepatitis after eleventh birthday
    • Confirmed positive test for hepatitis B surface antigen
    • Reactive test to antibodies to hepatitis B core on more than one occasion
    • Present or past clinical or laboratory evidence of infection with hepatitis C virus, human T-cell lymphotropic virus, or HIV
    • History of babesiosis or Chagas disease
    • Skin lesions
    • Family history of CJD
    • Risk of VCJD
    • Recipient of dura mater or human pituitary growth hormone
    • Use of a needle to administer nonprescription drugs
  • Deferral Periods for Potential Transfusion-Transmitted Infections (AABB)

    • History of Malaria (3 years)
    • Lived in endemic area for 5 consecutive years (3 years from departure)
    • Travel to endemic area (1 year from departure)
    • Leishmaniasis (1 year from departure)
