Section 3: Maze

Cards (9)

  • Start and end of dance
Start: Monks leave boxes + building maze, SLC at side building maze using small blocks

End: LM trapped and left in a centre box
  • F+C: 3 movements and analysis

-LM backwards handspring across stage: emphasising freedom

-LM contained in the maze but free to move around it, pops in and out of it, climbing on top of the vertical box and flipping inside it: (experimenting/finding place in society?)

-LM hides as monks destroy the maze, trapped in a singular box, hitting the sides with an anxious expression, all other boxes are removed: (society deciding that this is the box he fits into, not allowing him other choices?)
  • O+NC: 1 movement and analysis
-Acrobatic kung fu backwards handspring: old china kung fu
  • JoA: 1 movement and analysis

-Appears as if LM is doing an exam of some kind as he is in the centre as the monks watch from the side-lines: attempting to gain their approval and acceptance?
  • B+D: 2 movements and analysis
-A maze of boxes is built, then is destroyed leaving only one box (containing LM) in the centre
-Monks take the maze apart and put the boxes to the sides in two rows - much more simplistic than the maze, mankind want to be able to easily fit people into boxes/stereotypes without them having their own choice
  • T: 1 movement and analysis
-LM's transformation from freedom, happiness to containment and fear
  • Set + analysis
Boxes go from pond, to maze, to single box left in centre with others in lines on the sides: Building/destroying, could link to O+NC as it's the industrialisation of natural areas
  • Music + analysis
Regular piano beat, like marching, efficient. Silence as LM moves to centre stage, softer, mischievous/childish piano and violin as he is in the maze, low piano notes as the maze begins to be destroyed, mournful violin as he is trapped
  • Lighting + analysis
Spotlight on LM as he is trapped: highlights important moment
