Section 10: Monkey

Cards (7)

  • Start and end of dance
Starts with LM popping out from behind metal box, ends with older monk running off stage and leaving LM alone
  • O+NC: 2 movements and analysis
-Monkey kung-fu performed by older monk; arms curled and close to chest, small quick steps, head twitching, Acrobatic movements eg: Dive onto floor hands first, lands and rolls then springs up

-Older monk stands on the metal pole, right hand and foot resting on it while left hand is on forehead as if looking for something. Young monk copies this movement (student teacher relationship between monks old china) but they fight over pole, pulling it until the older monk 'hits' the young monk causing him to let go (transition from old to new china ?? less teaching so old knowledge lost?)
  • JoA: 1 movment and analysis
-LM imitates older monks movement to try and conform to be accepted but the older monk pushes him over and runs away, shows LM isn't quite accepted
  • B+D: 1 movment and analysis
-Building of connection between older and young monk, older destroys it when he pushes LM over
  • T: 1 movement and analysis
-The monk transforms and takes on the characterisation of a monkey - hides things in his pockets.
  • Prop and analysis
Metal pole used: Weapon of old china, used to resemble a branch or tree as well as weapon (transformation/O+Nc)
  • Lighting + music analysis
Bright stage, more playful music: Reflects the calmer, funny subject matter of the scene
