Section 15: Dominoes

• DOMINOES F+C: 1 movement

  -SLC hitting the sides of the box, looking around anxiously as he is pushed around in it, reaching out to monks (Dislikes being in a box, warning the monks against allowing themselves to be put in boxes by society? Reaching out for help?)
• DOMINOES JoA: 2 movements

  -SLC inside vertical box, monks standing outside, once they step in and boxes are pushed over they land flat on their backs while SLC is curved and walking (outsider)

  
  

  -LM climbs over boxes and helps SLC by pushing him flat onto the ground (helping him to fit in with other monks?) and helps him up (acceptance, friendly)
• DOMINOES Set + Analysis 2

  -Boxes resemble conveyor belts in a factory (pushed off top of horizontal wall, pushed by monks into diagonal vertical line): New china

  
  

  -Boxes are built into a line then pushed by LM: Building and destroying
• DOMINOES Music + Analysis

  Music steady drum with dramatic violin: Links to steady factory atmosphere + SLC's panic
• DOMINOES Start and end of dance

  Starts with SLC box being pushed off top of wall, ends with boxes being pushed over and SLC and monks walking out
• DORMITORY F+C: 2 movements

  -Monks contained in boxes, hit the sides then eventually jump out, top to bottom row (not liking the box they've been put into by society?)

  
  

  -SLC and LM contained in small space ontop of metal box
• DORMITORY O+NC: 3 movements

  -Tai chi performed by the monks in a triangular line formation: (eg: step out into wide stance, arms slowly brought up, out in front, palms to floor, then the elbows go out to the side, then arms are pushed out to the front, palms facing the audience)

  
  

  -Unison shows their collectivist culture

  
  

  -Shadow cast by SLC on wall could be reference to a shaolin story where a monk left the mark of his shadow on a cave wall
• DORMITORY JoA: 3 movements

  -SLC helps LM onto top of metal box by holding his hand as he walks up the side (helping supporting each other)

  -SLC sadly reaches out to monks as they are in the boxes (could show him wanting to bea part of them or wanting to help them escape from their boxes)

  -Monk on top of boxes briefly regards SLC and LM, doesn't attack, just looks then moves on

  Boxes stacked closely together horizontally: Crowded housing in new china

  Spotlight on SLC and Monks, then on whole stage: separate to integrated
• DORMITORY Start and end of dance

  Starts with LM being helped up onto box and monks entering their boxes, ends with SLC climbing into wooden box
