Week 2 - Health and Safety Risks

Cards (7)

  • What are the four areas of health and safety that we are considering?
    1. Occupational Health
    2. Worker Wellbeing
    3. Personal Safety
    4. Process Safety
  • What is defence-in-depth?
If the hazards and threats cannot be eliminated, then adequate layers of controls need to be selected to prevent the unwanted event, and to mitigate the consequences
  • What is safety culture? Name some types of safety culture.
Refer to the safety-related beliefs, values and attitudes shared by the majority of people within an organisation. It characterises the 'way we do things around here'
ie. 'who cares as long as we're not caught'
  • What is a process safety management system (PSMS) and why do we need them?
A system to ensure health and safety risks are effectively managed and that the aforementioned activities are performed to a high quality by the right people at the right time
  • What are the 3 main approaches to process safety?
    1. Inherently safer design
    2. Defence-in-depth
    3. Resilience engineering
  • What is inherently safe design?
Seeking to reduce the magnitude/severity of potential lieklihood of process safety accidents in a number of ways
  • What is resilience engineering?
The intrinsic ability of a system to adjust its functioning prior to, during, or following changes and disturbances, so that it can sustain required operations
