    • Causes

    • Most common cause of congenital disease and Viral mental retardation 
    • Largest genome among Herpes viridae family  
    • CMV is the most common cause of heterophile negative infectious mononucleosis 
    • Associated with self limited mononucleosis syndrome in health individual 
    • Repeated contact with the virus is necessary infection
  • Latency of CMV/HHV-5
    WBC & endothelial cells
  • MOT of CMV/HHV-5
    • Cross the placenta, breastmilk
    • Saliva in young children 
    • Sexually 
    • Blood transfusion 
    • Organ transplant
  • Infectious states caused by CMV
    1. Asymptomatic infection 
    2. Congenital disease 
    3. CMV is one of the TOURCHES
    4. This organism will reactivate during a latent state
    5. CMV mononucleosis 
    6. Can cause mononucleosis syndrome in young children similar to that caused by Epstein Barr virus 
    7. CMV can reactivate in immunocompromised patients causing retinitis, pneumonia, disseminated infection, esophagitis and even death 
    8. Marrow transplant patients - CMV pneumonitis 
    9. AIDS patient - CMV retinitis
