Her original name was Barra, she belonged to the tribe of Quraish. She was the sister-in-law of Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib, an uncle of the Holy Prophet

Proposal of marriage
On the initiative of Hazrat Abbas, the Holy Prophet sent her a proposal of marriage that was accepted. The marriage took place in 7 A.H.
Meaning of Maimunah
Maimunah means the blessed one. She was named Maimunah because she was married to the Holy Prophet at a time when he and his followers were able to enter Makkah after years of exile.
