Fick's law and factors affecting diffusion

Cards (10)

  • What is Fick's law?
rate of diffusion∝ surface area x concentration difference Ă· thickness of membrane.
  • What are some factors that affect diffusion?
    -Concentration gradient
    -Temperature
    -Distance
    -Surface area
    -SA:V
  • How does concentration gradient affect diffusion?
The difference between two concentrations. The bigger the difference/ steeper the concentration the faster the diffusion. The smaller the difference/less steep concentration, the slower the diffusion.
  • How does temperature affect diffusion?
How hot or cold it is. The higher the temperature, the more kinetic energy so the faster the diffusion. The lower the temperature, the lower the kinetic energy so the slower the diffusion.
  • How does distance affect diffusion?
How far particles have to diffuse. The further the particles have to diffuse, the slower the diffusion. The closer the particles have to diffuse, the faster the diffusion.
  • How does surface area affect diffusion?
How big the area through the particles pass. The bigger the surface area, the more space particles have to pass through so the faster the rate of diffusion. The smaller the surface area, the less space particles have to pass through so the slower the diffusion.
  • What is surface area?
area of one side x n.o of faces.
  • What is volume?
    length x width x height.
  • How does volume affect diffusion?
The smaller the volume the less space so the shorter the distance and the faster the diffusion. The bigger the volume, the more space so the bigger the distance and the slower the diffusion.
  • How does SA:V ratio affect diffusion?
Surface area to volume ratio affects diffusion by increasing the rate of diffusion as the ratio increases.
