  • Straight cut
    sudden change of shot from one viewpoint or location to another - allows timing of actions up to audience interpretation
  • Reaction Shot
    A shot where a participant reacts to events/ action, often used to guide the audiences reaction to a scene
  • Fade
    A transition to or from a blank screen - usually means the end of something or a passing of time
  • Wipe
    An optical effect in which one shot wipes another of the screen for dramatic effect
  • Shot - reverse -shot
    a cut that has a reason- to show changes of speaker
  • Cross cutting
    Used to establish action occurring at the same time in different places- suggests simultaneity of actions by cutting between them
  • Dissolves
    A slow transition as one image merges into another - can show the passing of time
  • Jump cut
    An abrupt switch from one shot to another, used to make a dramatic point - not often used in film, more in music videos
  • Motivated cut
    a reason for a cut- to show the audience something. the camera work and editing are determines by the action eg showing a character looking at something then show what they are looking at
  • Match on action
    A cut that connects two different views of the same action at the same moment in the movement - seems like the movement continues uninterrupted
  • Graphic Match
    an edit in which a dominant shape or line in one shot provides a visual transition to a similar shape or line in the next shot
  • Montage sequence
    Series of short shots sequenced to condense space, time and information
  • Continuity edit
    Makes the action seems as fluid as possible so the audience isn't aware of the editing process
  • Superimposition
    Two or more images are placed over each other in the same frame.
  • Split screen
    division of the screen to dhow 2 or more lines of action simultaneously
  • Cutaway
    'bridging' shot between 2 shots of the same subject or time often used to soften jumps in time/space, or used in flashbacks
  • Accelerated editing
    Process of shortening the video length or duration snf increasing the speed in order transmit the idea of excitement and rhythm
  • Dialogue editing
    post sound process that focuses on cleaning up all the production sound problems and smoothing out an actors voice performance
  • Parallell editing
    used to jump between 2 scenes happening at the same time to increase the feeling of suspense and increase the pacing of the scene
  • Invisible editing
    cuts 2 scenes with similar fames together to hide the transition from viewers for a smooth unnoticeable cut
  • Long take
    A single shot with a longer duration than most other shots- several minutes, may contain camera movements on a dolly
  • Overcranking
    slow motion
  • Unercranking
    speeding up
  • linear narrative
    a narrative that goes in chronological order.
  • Freeze frame
    When the movement of the film image appears to stop so that it appears like a photographic still.
  • Bullet time
    Uses multiple cameras to display the passage of time as extremely slow or completely frozen
  • Flash bulb
    a white light flash that can increase action or pass time
