  • the 2011 census showed that the UKs population is 87.2% white British
  • despite racial discrimination being made illegal in 1965 , people from ethnic minorities still have worse life chances than people who are white British
  • despite black children starting school with smiliar literacy and numeracy than white children they do less well in school. Children from BAME backgrounds do less well at GCSE and A-level than white children
  • OFSTED highlights black boys are 3x more likely to get excluded from school than white boys, partly because of racism in schools. This increases their risk of being forced into gangs and reduces their opportunities of a good job and income as adults
  • people from ethnic minority backgrounds are more likely to be unemployed and live in poverty compared to white British people e.g. over 50% Bangladeshi people live in poverty (GOV.UK) - means they live in poorer quality housing and experience poorer health and lower life expectance
  • institutional racism in the police force black people are 3x more likely to be stopped and searched and arrested than their white counterparts. (Theresa May Race Disparity report)
