• IM injections for neonates

  • Vitamin K and hepatitis B at birth
  • Use a 25 gauge 5/8 inch needle and 1 cc syringe
  • Given in the vastus lateralis
  • Only 0.5 cc in one injection to a newborn

  • Done on lateral or medial aspect of foot NEVER on walking surface of foot or heel
  • NEVER milk
• APGAR score measures respiratory effort, heart rate, muscle tone, reflex activity and color
• Mouth before Nose when suctioning

  -Less chance of UTI in the first year of life

• Circumcision care

  -Petroleum jelly for at least 24 hours to prevent it from sticking to diaper

  -Warning signs: bleeding, extreme swelling, foul odor, greenish-yellow discharge, no voids for more than 8 hours and redness that persists past 3 days

  -A whitish yellow film with cover the penis as it heals- do not rub off
