  • Left Realism:
    • sees unfairness in society as the reason for criminal behaviours
    • help/support
    • criminals are often stealing or committing other crimes because they have been let down by society
  • Policies to reduce inequality:
    • Left realists call for major structural changes to society to reduce inequality.
    • It looks to tackle discrimination, lack of opportunities for the poor and increase good housing and education for all.
    • This would reduce relative deprivation and as such the need for people to commit crime.
  • Democratic Policing:
    • People may distrust the police, so policies should aim to improve relations between police and public.
    • The community can then be part of deciding what priorities the police should focus on in their area.
  • Improve Opportunities:
    Police should improve housing, job security, access to healthcare to reduce deprivation and need to commit crime.
  • Multi Agency approach to reducing crime:
    • Policies which make agencies work together
    • An example of a multi-agency system would be anti-knife campaign led by police, doctors and social services
