  • Policies:
    • CCTV- People are aware of being watched so they modify their behaviour
    • Profiling- Surveillance can be influences by date, where certain groups are targeted more. This could link to age, gender, race.
  • Evaluation:
    • Profiling surveillance is likely to be discriminatory
    • Black young men are particularly likely to be targeted (self-fulfilling prophecy could occur)
    • Certain groups are overrepresented in crime statistics, leading to unfairness over surveillance
    • CCTV is not a deterrent. People are prepared to take the risk and can easily disguise their identity.
    • CCTV is now used as car tax, insurance checks and social studies a so not always there to prevent crime. This means people who once supported CCTV as crime prevention no longer do so now.
