  • Story of this coffee
Like the lush Indonesian island of its origin, this spicy coffee stands alone. Our roasters love transforming these unpredictable beans from dark coral green to tiger orange to a rich, oily mahogany. Coffee from Sumatra is the foundation of our most treasured blends.
  • Why we love this coffee?
The flavour of Sumatran coffee is distinctive, unmistakable, and found no where else in the world. The heavy, full body and concentrated herbal spice notes are hallmarks of great coffee from this Indonesian island- most of which comes from small independent farms, often the farmers backyard.
Through Sumatra we care deeply about the farmers and people of this incredible part of the world. In 2016, we opened a Farmer Support Centre (FSC) here. This Asia-pacific FSC shares the best practises in open-agronomy and coffee processing throughout this critical coffee origin.
  • When was Sumatra first offered?
    1972
  • Behind the design.
There is a quote from Pour Your Heart Into It, in which Howard Schultz describes his first taste of Starbucks coffee at the Pike Place market store.
Smaller than other species of tiger, the fierce Sumatran tigers are found only on the island of Sumatra.
