Difference between luminous and non-luminous object

Cards (12)

  • Luminous objects- these are object that emit or send off their own light .They tend to radiate heat as an effect of being luminous and can store energy.
    for example:
    • sun
    • stars
    • light bulbes
    • lamps
    • laser
    • campfires
  • Non-luminous objects- objects that do not emit light.
    example:
    • moon
    • cars
    • buildings etc.(most of the things that we see)
  • Light can be produced through incandescence and luminescent.
  • Incandescent- when an object is at very high temperature it starts to glow and become dull red in color.
  • Luminescent- process which light is produced other than by heating.
  • 2 forms of luminescene:
    • fluorescence
    • Phosporescene
  • Fluorescent- refers to the release of light that last no more than about 10 nanoseconds after it begins.
  • Phosphorescent- refers to the release of light that last longer than 10 seconds.
  • Light and Transparency
    • Transparent
    • Opaque
    • Translucent
  • Transparent- A material that allows light to pass through it, but not other forms of radiation.
  • Opaque- no light can pass through it, it is completely black.
  • Translucent- A substance that transmits light but does not absorb it.
