• Internal conflicts


  Often the most compelling as they offer insight into a character's motivations and inner turmoil
• External conflict

  Usually involve a character battling against a force outside them, such as another person or nature itself
• Man vs Self


  Internal struggle that a character experiences within themselves
• Man vs Fate

  A form of internal struggle where the protagonist battles against the predetermined fate or destiny that they believe is bestowed upon them
• Man vs Society 


  A character battles against the larger society they live in
• Man vs Nature


  Another form of external conflict where a character encounters natural elements such as physical barriers, natural disasters, or environmental challenges in their journey
• Man vs Technology 


  Portrays a protagonist in a clash against an advanced technological force such as artificial intelligence, robots/computers or other futuristic technologies
• Man vs Man


  One of the most common forms depicted in literature. In this type of conflict, a protagonist encounters an antagonist who is usually opposing them out of individual interests
• Man vs Supernatural 


  Involves a protagonist engaging in a battle against an entity smaller or greater than oneself such as mythological creatures, ghosts, aliens
• Enjambment 


  When a sentence runs over the next line or stanza
• Imagery

  The use if words to create images in the readers mind based on the five senses of sight, smell, touch, hearing and taste
• Personification

  A literary device often used in poetry where human characteristics are applied to make inanimate things objects or animals
• Simile 


  A literary device that compares one thing with another using like or as
• Stanza

  Organising technique which places a group of lines in a poem together
• Tone

  The general character or attitude of a place, piece of writing, situation, etc
• Soliloquy

  A literary device most often found in dramas, in which a character speaks to him or herself, relating his or her innermost thoughts
• Symbolism

  A literary device in a which a writer uses on thing - usually a physical object to represent something more abstract
• Caesura

  A break or pause in the middle of a line or verse
• Simile

  A literary device that compares on thing with another using like or as
