  • Printed Wiring Board (PCB)
used in electronics to build electronic devices
    1. a place to mount the components
    2. provides the means of electrical connection between the components
two purposes of construction of PCB
  • Substrate
gives the PCB its rigidity and thickness
  • Fiberglass
this is what a substrate is usually made of
  • Copper
a foil, which is laminated to the board with heat and adhesive
  • Solder Mask
The layer on top of the copper foil; gives the PCB its green color; to insulate the copper traces from accidental contact with other metal, solder, or conductive bits
  • Silkscreen
    • applied on top of the solder mask layer
    • adds letters, numbers, and symbols to the PCB that allow for easier assembly and indicators for humans to better understand the board
    • to indicate what the function each pin or LED
  • Breadboard
way of making a temporary circuit
    for testing purposes
  • Stripboard
has parallel strips of copper track on one side
  • Printed Circuit Board
have copper tracks connecting the holes where the components are placed
  • Surface Mount Technology
method of constructing electronic circuits in which the components (SMC, or Surface Mounted Components) are mounted directly onto the surface of printed circuit board
  • Soldering
noun. refers to the alloy (a substance composed of two or more metals) that typically comes as a long, thin wire in spools or tubes
verb. means to join together two pieces of metal in what is called a solder joint
  • Soldering Iron
supplies heat to melt solder so that it can flow into the joint between two workpieces
  • Soldering Tips
part of the iron that heats up and allows solder to flow around the two components being joined
  • Wand
part of the iron that holds the tip
part that is handled by the user
  • Base
control box that allows the adjusting of temperatures
  • Stand (Cradle)

houses the iron when it is not in use
  • Wave Soldering
an in-line process in which the underside of the printed circuit board is treated with flux, then preheated and immersed in liquid solder
