Waste Managment

Cards (3)

    • Waste management - Air:
    • Smoke: Increases the number of tiny, solid particulates in the air
    • Smoke: By burning fossil fuels, there are more particulates in the air which reflect sunlight so less light is on the Earth's surface
    • Smoke: Burn less fossil fuels
    • Acid rain: Damages the environment as it falls onto trees. It can also kill leaves, buds, flowers and fruit. If it soaks into the soil, it will destroy their roots
    • Acid rain: Use more renewable energy sources
    • Waste management - Water:
    • Fertiliser: Nitrates from fertilisers are washed easily into bodies of water
    • Fertiliser: Apply them in the proper amount, at the right time of year
    • Sewage: Untreated sewage that is washed into waterways causes high levels of nitrates in water, stimulating the growth of algae which increases the competition of light, unbalancing the underwater food chains
    • Sewage: Improve waste cleaning system
    • Toxic chemicals: Can be washed into waterways and can have the same bioaccumulation effect on aquatic life
    • Toxic chemicals: Reduce the use of pesticides
    • Waste management - Land:
    • Landfill: Household waste fills landfill sites, which take up a lot of room and destroy natural habitats
    • Landfill: By recycling/reusing more
    • Toxic chemicals: Can poison soil for miles around, making it harder to safely eat crops/livestock
    • Toxic chemicals: Reduce the use of weedkillers and pesticides
