  • Image of God
    The belief that all humans share some of the qualities of God
  • Sanctity of life
    The belief that all human life is precious and holy

    The idea that believers have a duty to look after the environment on behalf of God

    The belief that God is beyond and outside life on earth and the universe; he is unlimited

  • Humanity is created last and scripture tells us that "God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them" (Genesis 1:27). This means that humans share qualities with God like love and knowledge.
  • God does not require more than his own word in order to create. God is beyond the created world, which means he is transcendent.
  • Genesis 1 shows us that God has the power to do whatever he wants: he can create things from nothing (ex nihilo).
  • Catholics do not believe that this is a scientific account of creation. It is meant to give a reason for creation rather than how it was done. It is not interpreted literally or as a historical document.
