  • Divine right of kings
    The idea that Kings were chosen by God to be his messenger and rule for him. The king only had to answer to God so they believed they could do anything
    • Macbeth and Lady Macbeth went against that when they killed King Duncan In Act 2, scene 2

    Witch hunts were ordered and ‘wicthes‘ were executed.
    • most people accused of witchcraft were difficult women
    • women were also blamed as they were seen as the ‘weaker‘ sex
    • People believed the ‘witches’ powers came from the devil
    • Lady believed to be the fourth witch because she is the opposite of a normal Jacobean women.
  • King James I obsession with witchcraft
    He was obsessed with hunting Down witches and killing them because he blamed them for killing his mother and for nearly killing him and his future wife at sea.

    The idea that God created a social order for everybody and chose where you belonged.
    • was seen as mortal sin to try and go up the chain as God himself set your place in society
