Beck's evaluation

Cards (2)

  • One limitation of Beck's negative triad is that it is argued to be deterministic, as it is a cognitive explanation which suggests depression to be a result of an individual's negative thinking. This theory therefore ignores biological research that has indicated depression can be caused by biological factors and genetics. Therefore the explanation only focuses on cognitive aspects and fails to consider the biological influences of depression.
  • However, there is research to support cognitive vulnerability to disorders, as seen by Cohen (2010) who tracked the development of 473 adolescents, regularly meaduring cognitive vulnerability, it was found that those showing cognitive vulnerability predicted later depression, suggesting the association between an individual's thinking and the development of disorders.
