  • What is utilitarianism?
    Utilitarians believe thay the right action is the one that produces the greatest good for the greatest number of people.
  • What is divine command theory?
    No matter what the situation if it doesn't follow Gods command it is wrong.
  • What is deontology?
    Certain actions are always wrong and certain actions are always right and it is our duty to always do the right thing.
  • What is situation ethics?
    When we are faced with a decision about what is the right thing to do then we should not apply any rules but act on the basis of love.
  • What is deterrence?
    the attempt to discourage crime the person repeating the crime, and it is hoped that the fear of a punishment will stop other individuals from committing crimes.
  • What is protection?
    Punishment by locking someone up to protect them and society from there behaviour.
  • What is retribution?
    Punishment that fits the crime.(eye for an eye)
  • What is reform?
    Punishment that helps them become responsible members of society.
  • What is reparation?

    Making amends by giving back to the victim or society.
  • What is vindication?
    an aim of punishment that means offenders must be punished to show that the law is respected and is right.
  • For capital punishment
    A deterrent. Protects society. Closure to victims.
  • Bible verses for capital punishment
    Whoever shed the blood of a man, by man shall his blood be shed. An eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth.

    This teaches that if someone takes the life of another human they loose there right to live.

    This means we should receive the same punishment for the crime we committed.
  • Against Capital Punishment
    Doesn't necessarily deter crime more than life in prison, wrongful execution, murder is inherently wrong and the GOV should lead by example and not participate.

    This teaches that life is sacredly given by God and humans don't have the right to take it away.

    This is one of the 10 Commandments that God gave to humans to follow.
  • Jeremy Bentham developed utilitarianism by arguing that all human beings seek to maximize their own pleasure and minimize their own pain.
