light-dependant reactions

Cards (13)

  • what do thylakloids contain?
contains different pigments such as clorophyll which absorbs different wavelengths
  • what is the rate of photosynthesis limited by?
light intensity, carbondioxide concentration and temperature
  • where does photosynthesis take place?
    in the leaves within chloroplast
  • where does the light dependant reaction take place?
    thylakloid membrane
  • what are the two products of the light dependant reaction?
    ATP and NADPH
  • what is chemiosmosis?
the movement of H+ ion into the stroma from the thylakloid space from a high concentration to a low concentration passed a partially permeable membrane
  • how do you maintain the proton gradient?
    • as the electrons pass through protein complexes via redox reactions ,
    • energy is produced so energy is supplied for active transport of H+ ions from the stroma to the thylakloid space
  • what is photophosphorylation?
    • the process is called photophosphorylation
    • H+ ions move through ATP synthase (enzyme) into the stroma due to the concentration gradient, this movement is known as chemiosmosis
    • ADP + Pi →ATP
  • what is photoionisation?
    • photoionisation is when light energy is absorbed by the chlorophyll and transferred to electrons which then get excited
    • the excited electrons are propelled out of the chlorophyll leave the chlorophyll positive and oxidises
  • describe the electron transfer chain?
    • the electron which get propelled out travel down a chain of protein complexes via redox reactions
    • this produces energy which enables the active transport of H+ ions
  • describe the role of NADP?
    • NADP is a co-enzyme that helps electrons leave the final protein molecule at the end of the electron transfer chain
    • NADP reacts with a H+ in the stroma and gains an electron to produce reduced NADP aka NADPH
  • what is NADP?
    a co enzyme
  • what is photolysis?
    • the splitting of a water molecule
    • electrons lost from chlorophyll are restored and more H+ into the thylakloid space
    • light splits water into H+ , O2 ,e-
    • takes place in the thylakloid space
