• Fear of communism: Many saw communism as a bigger threat than Hitler and Germany was a good wall between communism and the UK
• Memories of WW1: Leaders wanted to avoid another war
• Treaty of Versailles: Many felt that the ToV was unfair
• American support: the USA had been isolationist and the UK wasn't sure it could win without the USA
• British arms: Britain only started rearming in 1935 and thought they were behind Germany
• economic debts: Britain and France still had debts from WW1
