Dharavi

• One million people live illegally
• Asia's second largest shanty town
• Situated between two main railway links
• Cheap accommodation for low skill workers, many have electricity
• Small workshops - cheap pottery, plastic toys, clothes etc.
• Average incomes are low as Mumbai is very expensive they cannot afford to move
• Many people are forced to work in the informal sector (self-employed, little security e.g. street trading)
• 80% of Mumbai's waste is recycled in Dharavi
• Sanitation issues - estimated that only 1 toilet per 1,400 residents so many use the river for use, spreading many diseases within the slums and severely limiting the clean water supply
• Locational issues - Dharavi lies just north of central Mumbai, this severely restricts the city growth. It also lies across routes which bring people from northern suburbs into the city.
