Cheap accommodation for low skill workers, many have electricity
Small workshops - cheap pottery, plastic toys, clothes etc.
Average incomes are low as Mumbai is very expensive they cannot afford to move
Many people are forced to work in the informal sector (self-employed, little security e.g. street trading)
80% of Mumbai's waste is recycled in Dharavi
Sanitation issues - estimated that only 1 toilet per 1,400 residents so many use the river for use, spreading many diseases within the slums and severely limiting the clean water supply
Locational issues - Dharavi lies just north of central Mumbai, this severely restricts the city growth. It also lies across routes which bring people from northern suburbs into the city.
