Nursing management

• Direct general management of anemia is addressing the cause of anemia and replacing blood loss as needed to sustain adequate oxygenation
• Other nursing managements

  • promote optimal activity and protect from injury
  • reduce activity and stimuli that increase cardiac output
  • provide nutritional needs and administer any prescribed nutritional supplements (eg: iron)
  • pt and family education
• Nursing actions for anemic pt

  • administer oxygen PRN or as prescribed
  • administer blood product or erythropoietin
  • allow for rest periods between activity
  • elevate pts head on pillows during SOB episodes
  • provide extra blankets if pt is cold
  • teach pt about anemia symptom management
• Acute blood loss is a sudden blood loss often caused by trauma, surgical condition or disease
• Chronic blood loss is often caused by the GU or GI tract
• Nursing management for blood loss

  • identify and control bleeding
  • treat source of bleeding
  • replace with transfusions
  • rehydrate with fluids
