Endothermic and Exothermic reactions

Cards (7)

  • chemical reactions always involve a transfer of energy. They can either be Endothermic or exothermic
  • Endothermic reactions absorb thermal energy which is heat, and therefore decrease in temperature
  • some examples of this may include photosynthesis and thermal decomposition.
  • many endothermic reactions will not occur unless heat is supplied. for example the heat you use to cook food is the energy to drive endothermic chemical reactions happening in the food
  • exothermic reactions release thermal enegry (heat) into their surroundings. exothermic reactions can occur spontaneously and some are explosive. some examples include combustion, respiration, neutralization of acids with alkalis and reactions of metals with acid
  • provide an example of endothemeric reactions
the heat used use to cook food
  • exothermic reactions usually need a small kick of energy to get started
