    They wanted to see the re-establishment of a parliament in Ireland and to achieve this through political means.

    Isaac Butt in 1874, they where the largest nationalist political party: they won 86 of 105 seats in the 1885 general election, under the Home Rule.

    Ireland would have its own parliament in Dublin to govern local affairs, while Westminster could still control trade and foreign affairs. Ireland would still be part of the United Kingdom.
