• step 1; place slide onto stage and clip it on
• step 2: select the lowest power on the objective lens (4x)
• step 3: slowly turn coarse focussing dial to change the position of the objective lenses so it almost touches the slide
• step 4: look through eyepiece, and slowly turn coarse focussing dial till the cell is in focus again
• step 5: use the fine focussing dial to turn up the resolution of the cell image
• step 6: select higher power objective lens, adjust fine focussing dial to bring cells back into focus
• step 7: use a pencil to make a clear labelled drawing of some of the cells'
