'a form of social influence, where group pressure, real or imagined, results in a change of behaviour'.
it's the glue that holds our society together.
features of conformity?
change in behaviour to suit the attitude, beliefs or behaviours of those around us.
groups can influence our behaviour:
membership group, e.g. friend group.
reference group, e.g. music groups, one direction.
pressure can be?
implicit- imagined/inferred
explicity- real/stated.
compliance (type of conformity):
agree publically but privately maintain own views.
identification (type of conformity):
adopting the views both publically & privately because you value the membership of that group. often temporary, e.g. student dress or interests.
internalisation/conversion (type of conformity):
true change of behaviour; new attitudes & behaviours become part of new value system.
don't depend on the presence of the group, e.g. becoming a member of a religious group permanently or a vegetarian even when they don't have vegetarian friends.
