  • Species - groups of actually or potentially
    interbreeding natural populations that cannot mate with other groups
  • Population - Consists of all organisms of the same species living in the same area at the same time.
  • Carlos Von Linnaeus - Hierarchical taxonomic system of classification.
  • Taxonomy - Deals with the naming, classifying, and describing of living things.
  • Kingdom - Highest level of classification. A group of related Phylum. (Fungi, Plantae, Animalia, Protista, Monera)
  • Phylum - More specific than kingdom. A group of related classes.
  • Class - A group of related orders. (Phylum Chordata - Mammalia, Aves, Reptilia, Amphibia, and Fishes.) (Fishes - Chondrichthyes, Agnatha, Osteichthyes)
  • Chondrichthyes - cartilaginous fishes, sharks, rays, skates.
  • Agnatha - Jawless vertebrates, including lampreys and hagfish
  • Osteichthyes - bony fishes, have a backbone, and have scales.
  • Order - Group of related families. (Carnivora, Primates, Cetaceans, etc.)
  • Family - Group of related genera that are closely related to each other and are grouped together because they have similar characteristics
  • Genus - Group of related species.
  • Ex. A Lion: Family - Felidae, Genus - Panthera, Species - P. Leo, Scientific name - Panthera Leo
  • The three main domain system - Carl Woese
  • Three domain system - Archaea, Bacteria, Eukarya.
  • Bacteria is to Eubacteria
  • Archaea is to Archaebacteria
  • Eukarya is to Fungi, Protists, Animals, and Plants
