  • Redemptive - Jesus' Passion and Death is His ultimate service for the Kingdom. "The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many" (Mk. 10:45). "For this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins" (Mt. 26:28)
  • Atoning - Jesus' Passion and Death repaired the damaged caused by our sins. Jesus becomes both a priest and victim: "Christ our Paschal Lamb has been offered" (I Cor. 5:7). "He gave Himself up, to rescue us from the present evil age" (Gal. 1:4)
  • Freely offered for us and for our salvation - "Christ died for our sins" (1 Cor. 15:3) means: Jesus died because of our human sinfulness. Jesus died to show us and empower us to overcome sin and its effects. With Christ as the Way, we are able to bear the sins of many, not returning evil for evil, nor violence for violence in a vicious cycle of revenge. He himself bore our sins in His body upon the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness. By His wounds, you have been healed" (1 Pt. 2:21,24)
  • Perfect self-giving love for His Father and for us - "The Father loves me for this: that I lay down my life and will take it up again. No one takes it from me. I lay it down freely" (Jn. 10:17-18). " He humbled Himself, obediently accepting even death on a cross" (Phil. 2:8). His death is the greatest demonstration of God's unconditional love for His people
  • The Cross of Jesus Christ restores broken relationship with God and the grace of God that has been lost by sin. It regains heaven for us and makes salvation possible in the sense that Jesus' self-offering was the only perfect offering ever made to God. "The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are headed for ruin/ perishing, but for us who are being saved, it is the power of God. It is scandal for the Jews and stupidity as far as the Greeks are concerned, but for us, it is salvation (1 Cor. 1:18)
