Hare (Paranoid Student)

Cards (4)

  • Hares argument:
Hare uses a non-cognitivist approach to say that religious language is a blik so doesn’t need to be falsified because it is a personal belief unrelated to a claim about the wider world
  • Blik= a belief, ideology, opinion (not claims about the world just internal attitude)
  • The parable ⁃ a student has a delusional belief that the Dons are trying to murder him ⁃ His friends decide to introduce him to the nicest Don to try and convince him otherwise ⁃ The student however says the Don’s niceness is just a part of their plan to murder him . The student cannot be rationalised with so the assertions cannot be falsified. But their belief is a "blik"
  • Issue: Flew says this poses a huge issue for Christians as Jesus either resurrected or didn't (it has real world importance)
