  • Cultural factors
    Concepts:
    Cultural deprivation refers to lacking the correct values and attitudes needed for educational success, while cultural capital means that someone has the cultural values and attitudes needed for educational success. There are several cultural factors including intellectual development, parental attitudes and languages. 
    Evaluation:
    A student's culture may affect their educational achievement if their parent doesn't prioritize education, so they don't see the value in studying and doing well in classes.
  • Material factors
    Concepts:
    Material deprivation refers to lacking material items/financial support to enable educational success while economic capital means that someone has the financial resources to enable educational success. There are several material factors including diet and health, housing and the financial cost of education. 
    Evaluation:
    Material deprivation is the lack of specific material items or finances to buy said items so a student can have equal chance as everyone else
  • Racism in Wider Society
    Concepts:
    Discrimination in housing: Bramley et al
    Black people are three and a half times more likely to experience homelessness
    Discrimination in employment: Wood
    Sent three closely matched job applications, one appeared from a white person and two others from ethnic minority groups. 1/6 ethnic minority applicants were offered interviews compared to 1/9 white applicants.
    Evaluation:
    Racism in wider society causes ethnic groups to be at a disadvantage in everyday life as well as in the workplace.
