  • In this unit we looked at the six articles of belief for Sunni Muslims. These are tawhid, angels, prophets, holy books, day of judgement and predestination
  • Tawhid
This means the oneness of Allah
  • Predestination
What happens to us in the future is decided for us before we do it. Allah makes these decisions for us
  • Jannah
This is paradise. It is the Islamic equivalent to heaven. It described as having everything a soul could desire
  • Jahannam
This is the Islamic word for hell. It describes physical torture such as being melted
  • Prophets
These are people who receive new revelation from Allah. They are perfect examples of how to live
  • The word 'Risalah' literally translates to mean prophethood. All prophets have three roles: 1. To act as intermediaries between Allah and humans by receiving and passing on Allah's message, 2. To be a perfect example of how this message should be practised to others in the community, 3. To lead the community so they will also live as Allah wants them to
  • Muhammad is known as the 'seal of the prophets' in Islam because he is the final prophet and the prophet for all people rather than just one group or community. Prophets in Islam include Adam, Ibrahim, Musa and Isa
  • Muslims believe that this life on Earth is a test, and therefore all actions a person makes during their life is important in determining whether a person goes to Jannah or Jahannam. This means that Muslims will be influenced in their lives. For example they may avoid doing bad deeds such as stealing as they believe they will be punished for them. Additionally, they will try to submit to Allah as this is counted as a good deed and they will be rewarded for it in Jannah
  • After death, Muslims believe: 1. Your soul is taken to barzakh. This is a barrier between the physical and spiritual world where the soul goes until all bodies are resurrected. 2. While the soul is in barzakh, they are questioned by two angels who ask a) who is your God? B) what is your religion? And c) what is your faith about Muhammad? If they answer correctly, their soul is in peace until the resurrection, if they answer incorrectly they are punished until the day of resurrection. 3. On the day of resurrection, the angel Israfil blows a trumpet to resurrect all bodies, then he blows the trumpet again and the day of judgement starts. Your good deeds and bad deeds will be weighed up and you will then be either sent to Paradise (Jannah) or Hell (Jahannam) for eternity
