Cards (10)

  • Required Practical
    1. Add one drop of iodine to each spotting well
    2. Place 2cm² of amylase, starch and pH buffer solution in 3 different test tubes
    3. Place test tubes in a water bath for 10min
    4. Add test tubes together and start stop watch
    5. Use stirring rod to transfer solution to iodine well every 20sec
    6. Record the time at which iodine no longer changes colour
    7. Repeat these steps with pH 6,7,8 and 9
  • Independent variable
    pH of buffer
  • Dependent variable
    Enzyme activity
  • Controls
    Temperature, enzyme
  • Enzyme
Break down large molecules into smaller
  • Enzymes
    • Made up of proteins
    • Chain of amino acids
    • Involved in reactions to maintain life such as Digestion, protein Synthesis, photosynthesis, respiration
  • Biological Catalyst
Substance that speeds up a reaction but isn't used up
  • Amylase break down starch into maltose
  • Protease break down proteins into amino acids
  • Lipase breaks down fats into fatty acids and glycerol
