  • Application Letters
Employment Application Letter, also referred to as the "job application letter" or "cover letter", is a one-page letter attached to the resume when applying for jobs. The purpose is to highlight the applicant's experiences and personal qualities for him to be considered for an interview schedule, as well as with the available job position.
  • Parts of an Application Letter
    • Heading
    • Date
    • Inside Address
    • Salutation
    • Body
    • Complimentary Close
    • Signature
  • Letter Format and Punctuation Style
    • Fullblock-Style
    • Modified Block Style
    • Semi-Block Style
    • Simplified NOMA (National Office Management Association)
  • Fullblock-Style is the most used style because of its simplicity. In this format, all parts are justified to the left.
  • Modified block is a type of format where applicant's address, complimentary close, signature and sender's identification is shifted to the right side. Note that the first sentence in the body or in each paragraph is not indented.
  • The least used format is the semi-block. It is almost the same as the modified block format; however, the difference is that the first sentence in each paragraph is indented.
  • Simplified NOMA (National Office Management Association) style omits the salutation and the complimentary close. All parts are flushed to the left margin as in the full block.
  • Resume is derived from the French word résumer which means "sum up."
  • Basically, a resume contains a written summary of an applicant's education, work experience, accomplishments, and needed skills for the job.
  • Resume length
    • If you have multifarious experience at a previous work, have earned several degrees or have taken more than a college degree, then your resume may be longer than two pages.
    • If you have just graduated from college and have no work experience yet, then your resume can be a page or two.
    • A one-page resume is better than padding your qualifications - meaning putting a lot of information that are not true and are the only meant to impress the prospective employer.
  • The Three Types of Resumes
    • Chronological Format
    • Functional Format
    • Combination Format
  • Chronological Format
    • It lists work experience in reverse time order (i.e. most recent work experiences first) with an emphasis on responsibilities and accomplishments.
    • Your career history shows growth and development
    • As fresh graduates, you may use this because you have no employment history yet.
    • Your career objective is very similar to your work experience
  • Functional Format
The functional resume is designed to stress the qualifications of the job seeker with less emphasis on specific employers and dates. Some functional resumes don't include a work history. However, not including a work history may create large questions in an employer's mind, so it is a good idea to include it.
  • When do you use Functional Format
    • You are a new graduate with little experience
    • Your career objective is very different from your experience.
    • Your work history is spotty and patchy
  • Combination Format
    • A combination of chronological and functional formats in the one resume. The most popular resume format.
    • Used to modernize chronological resumes and tailor your skills to the job.
  • Combination Format
    • You want to give the employer a snapshot of your relevant skills but also want to show you have a work history.
    • You have limited work experience in the field you are applying for, but work experience in other fields.
